Car Covers Glossary
Acid Rain
Referred to acidic perspiration these are harmful to all living forms. In industrial regions where the pollution is high acid rain may happen from dew, fog, snow or rain. Acid rains take place when the sulpher, nitrogen and other forms of pollutants in the air react with the atmosphere and produce acids. Pollution from automobiles and industrial power generating plants are the main culprits.
Bimini tops
These are canvas-made covers that are used in the marine industry such as for sheltering boats.
Breathable
The best car covers should be made from breathable materials. In such materials, heat and moisture does not get trapped and so the body of the automobile as also its paintwork remains protected as air can circulate within.
Composite
Solid materials of two or more substances having different physical attributes are referred to as a “Composite”. While each substance retains its characteristics, but it still contributes properties to the whole.
Denier
This is how the fineness for yarn is measured. It should be same as the fineness weighing one gram for each 9000 meters. A lower unit is better than a higher one. A 100-denier yarn is finer than a 150-denier yarn.
Loft
The thickness of an insulated material or a fabric is a “loft”.
Long-term storage
When vehicles are kept for long, it is referred to as long-term storage.
Lycra/spandex
An elastic polyurethane textile fiber is a Lycra.
Mildew
The growth of fungus generally white in color is known as mildew.
Napped finish
When the finish is elevated, downy and hairy, it is a Napped finish.
Photo degradation
UV rays of the sun can be cruel as it fades, cracks, discolors and chalks. But it is not always destructive as it can also transform ambergris that are found in the sperm whale intestine and become an ingredient in the making of precious perfumes.
Polyethylene
A polymer of ethylene that is chemical and moisture resistant. Polyethylene has good insulating properties and is used in insulation and packaging.
Polypropylene
A polymer of propylene it has application in organic synthesis. Hydrocarbons of petroleum are broken down to obtain this polymer.
Solution dyed
When colors are added in the fiber production process, it is known as “solution dyed”. It makes it steadfast as the fibers are spun into the yarn and this leads to a uniform permeated color where the color stays longer in the fabric.
Universal car cover
Any car cover that is not customized and can fit multiple vehicles of differing makes and models is referred to as a “universal car cover”. This one-size-fits-all design is never an exact match and this leaves gaps through which moisture can get in quite easily.
UV
Solar radiation contains ultra violet rays but they cannot be seen with the naked eye. However these rays can cause a lot of damage such as photo degradation.
UV resistant
A fabric or anything that offers protection from the harmful UV rays is said to be UV resistant.
Water Resistant
fabric or anything that offers protection from water is said to be water resistant.
